John Marcelli began his law enforcement career as a Union County Correction Officer at the Union County Jail in 2005. After graduating from the police academy Marcelli was assigned to various assignments in the jail and quickly developed a reputation for being a hard working officer. In 2008, Marcelli was promoted to Investigator and assigned to the Gang Intelligence Unit where he worked with numerous local, county, state & federal law enforcement agencies to develop intelligence about gang activity and crime.

In 2013 Marcelli joined the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office as a Detective. After graduating from the Basic Course for Investigators at the NJ Division of Criminal Justice Academy, Marcelli was promoted to Sergeant in 2019 as assigned to the Intelligence Unit. Marcelli is qualified as an expert in Street and prison gangs and has testified in court in a number of significant cases. Marcelli is a renowned teacher of gangs and has spoken at many law enforcement venues through the region.Marcelli was one of recipients of the William French Smith Award for Outstanding Contributions to Cooperative Law Enforcement in 2019 in Washington DC. From the US Department of Justice. This award was presented for their work in a Violent Crime Initiative in the Newark area with the US Attorney for the District of NJ. This initiative is credited with the 30% decrease of shooting victims in the Newark area.

Marcelli has been active with many charities and community outreach endeavors and has been an active member of the Italian American Police Society of New Jersey for many years. Marcelli has served on its Executive Board for several terms and is active on many committees where he works tirelessly. Marcelli is proud of his Italian heritage and being a law enforcement officer.
